The Danon Gallery is pleased to present the works of ARIE BERKOWITZ. Berkowitz's new works are a continuation of the pieces presented in last year's Israeli and international exhibitions. The current works deal in still life forms (a vase, a table, a rug) that belong within the domain of home and intimacy, and similarly touch upon the simplicity of scenery (the view from a window, a nightscape, etc). The formal minimalism and coloration of the pieces enable Berkowitz to work in and create a dialogue between a variety of artistic forms, such as: lines verses spots, sculpture verses painting, three dimensional verses two dimensional space, color verses the lack of, mass verses emptiness, positive space verses negative space, figurative verses abstract.
Berkowitz uses wood mediums to create his art: panels of bright wood or furniture pieces reconstructed into different forms, on these pieces are acrylic paintings (in brown or blue). The paintings contain a compendium of details, which are unified into individual and opaque patches of color that look like shadows. The "shadow" functions as a means of giving substance and weight to the objects, while imbuing them with weightlessness as if they hover in space. Berkowitz plays with the "exchanges" between wholeness and emptiness, the texture of "breathing" wood and opaque planes of color, between exposure and concealment.
Berkowitz has created unique interiors and scenery that present a perspective drawn from below to above, or "low views." The artist and his works anticipate the routine and everyday perspective, and approach this from a slightly different and lower angle. Berkowitz gives emphasis to views from the floor (low views), such as the leg of a table or chair or carpet, elements that are accepted as commonplace become the pivotal focus of creation.
The Danon Gallery is proud to introduce Berkowitz's dynamic new works this September. "Low View" consists of a collection of three-dimensional pieces that hang from the gallery wall. The exhibition opens on the 7th of September at noon. We invite the community at large to meet the artist and discuss his works in an open and cultural forum.
